Week Six - Syria refugees, Death of Alan Kurdi (歐洲難民潮-敘利亞男孩死亡事件)

Alan Kurdi (Kurdish: Alan Kurdî‎), initially reported as Aylan Kurdi, was a three-year-old Syrian boy of Kurdish ethnic background  whose image made global headlines after he drowned on 2 September 2015 in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of the Syrian refugee crisis. Photographs of his body were taken by Turkish journalist Nilüfer Demir and quickly spread around the world, prompting international responses. Because Kurdî's family had reportedly been trying to reach Canada, his death and the wider refugee crisis immediately became an issue in the 2015 Canadian federal election.

In the early hours of 2 September 2015, Kurdi and his family boarded a small plastic or rubber inflatable boat, which capsized about five minutes after leaving a beach at Bodrum in Turkey. Sixteen people were in the boat, which was designed for a maximum of eight people. They were trying to reach the Greek island of Kos, about 30 minutes (or 2.5 miles) from Bodrum. Kurdi's father said: "We had no life vests", but also said they were wearing life jackets, but they "were all fake". Others have stated that they believed that they were wearing lifejackets but the items were ineffective.

It was later stated on Syrian radio that the Kurdi family paid $5,860 for their four spaces on the boat, which had twelve passengers on it despite being only about five meters long. Alan Kurdi's mother joined in the trip even though she had a fear of being on the open sea. Tima Kurdi, Alan Kurdi's aunt, advised her sister not to go. The individuals on the boat evaded the Turkish coast guard by setting out from an isolated beach, going out late at night.

Around 5 a.m. authorities started an investigation, after an emergency call that a boat had capsized and bodies were coming ashore. The bodies of Kurdi and another child were discovered by two locals at around 6:30 a.m. on the same morning. The two men moved the bodies from the water onto the dry part of the beach. Later, Kurdi was photographed face-down on the water's edge by a Turkish press photographer.
On 3 September 2015, Kurdi along with brother Galib and mother Rehana were taken to Kobanî for burials, which took place the next day. It is Islamic tradition to bury the dead within 24 hours if possible.

Week Four - Warm starry nights, Blue Moon, Pluto, Earth 2.0 (太空新發現)

The planet, known as 452b, is also confidently called Earth 2.0. It was identified by researchers analyzing data received from the Kepler space telescope that was launched in 2009 to survey part of our Milky Way Galaxy for exoplanets. Orbiting 64 million miles above Earth, Kepler has discovered 1,030 planets to date. A dozen are orbiting within the “habitable zone” around other stars. Earth 2.0 is the best of these.

As described by Space.com in 2009, “The mission’s science instrument, called a photometer, contains the largest camera ever flown in space. Its 42 charge-coupled devices (CCDs) will detect slight dips in starlight, which occur when planets passing in front of their stars partially block the light from Kepler’s view.”

On July 30 and 31 the moon was  below the Summer Triangle all night. In 2015, we enjoyed a full moon on the first day of July and experience an encore on the last day of the month. The encore was known as a Blue Moon, for the relative rarity of the occasion. Moonrise occured at 8:14 p.m. on the 31st.

Week Five : Global Shopping Festival of the Singles' Day in 2015 (光棍節-全球購物節)

Singles Day, which takes place on November 11, is a consumer holiday in China and the world's biggest online shopping day of the year.
More sales were made via mobile ($9.8 bn) during the day-long festival in 2015  than was spent over the entire Singles Day in 2014.
It took Chinese consumers just three minutes to spend 1 bn yuan (£100m) on Singles Day in 2014.
In 2015, in five minutes and 45 seconds, online shoppers in China had splashed out five times that amount, Alibaba said.

Chinese consumers spent a record 91.2 bn yuan ($14.3 bn, £9.4 bn) online during the 24 hours of Singles Day in 2015, cementing the e-commerce extravaganza as the biggest day for internet shopping on the global retail calendar.
The 60pc sales growth exceeded expectations, as market research firm IDC had predicted that Alibaba's sales during Singles Day 2015 would rise by 52 pc to 87 bn yuan.

2015 years’ Singles Day, which Alibaba markets as the 11.11 Global Shopping Festival, featured more than six million products from over 40,000 merchants, up from 27,000 vendors in 2014.
Smartphone maker Xiao-Mi, which last year became the first store on Alibaba's Tmall platform to achieve sales of more than 1bn yuan, prepared to sell more than two million smartphones during the 24-hour period.
